Could be a typo
But more than likely the sticker has been swapped.
I see the truck has been repainted

You really need to look at the vin on the passenger frame rail. On top, just behind the front cab mount

It cannot be a typo due to the codes and the wheelbase pointing towards a Regular Cab. But, is the truck registered by the Certification Label VIN or not?

DMV's and LEO's do not go by the Certification Label VIN to register vehicles. They go by the hidden frame VIN

A common problem is that some people replace damaged left doors with used doors.

The VIN and codes on Certification Labels and Warranty Plates (1963/79) that are affixed to these doors no longer match the vehicles.

I will have to crawl under the truck and look for the frame rail plate.

Agree that I should see X instead of F but since I don't need inspections, they just rolled the title over to me.

Everything else with the truck matches. Even the color code. That is why I was coming up with some far fetched theories.

Okay, I’m thoroughly confused. On my ‘84, the big tag (same format as the pic posted by James) is on the cab structure, above the door latch. There’s no tag I can see on the door itself.

Can't find the frame rail plate. Felt around and it's all flaky paint chips brushing off.

Title has the VIN as on the cab tag. So how it was registered previously.

Dan the FrankenTruck it is then

And that is why the Certification Label is stuck on the rear door jamb opening not on the door.
At least on my 2 81's it is.

It has to be chalked up to a blunder at assembly. Both the door jam and the dash VIN match. Cab swap plausible but a chassis swap too? Plus you are bringing the old tags with you? Mess up at the assembly plant is what I am going to go with.

Easy enough to swap dash vin and door jam sticker

What does firewall vin say?(that is screwed on so not hard either)

The Certification Label (door jamb sticker) cannot be R&R'd, unless you know of a method that I don't.

The Certification Label is composed of an outer clear layer over the inner printed label.

If people attempt to peel it off, some of the outer layer will peel off, sometimes taking some of the inner layer along with it.

If you erect a cofferdam around it, then fill it with water, the entire label might peel off, but this will take months to occur.

If the label was damaged by an accident or fire, FoMoCo would supply a new label, but it was a PITA rigamarole to obtain it.

For one thing, a police report was required. I know, because I did this...multiple times...when I was a P/M

Some of these truck will have a "buck tag" affixed to the firewall. Buck tags were used by assembly line workers to assure the correct parts are installed that match the build sheet.

Excepting the VIN, codes on buck tags cannot be decoded.

VERY easy. Heat the metal and keep it hot for about an hour(heat gun works great) then the sticker comes off as one without leaving behind the "void" letters

Mine is OE for sure. So many theories on why the tag doesn't fully match has been interesting to read. A lot of things can happen in ~30yrs so may never know for sure.

Does not even have to take 30 years!
When I worked at a dealer ship I have seen a new car right off the truck as a Dodge Aspin on 1 side and Plymouth Volare on the other side.
Had to check the VIN to see just what make & model to was and then change the badging to match.

See if someone knows where the VIN is stamped on the frame and see if it matches everything else.

Heard it is on the passenger rail before the front cab mount. Tried to look and didn't spot anything. We'll see it when it comes time to do the body work and take the cab off.
