82 F150, 300 six that has always run great has suddenly started fouling plugs an will not run. I replaced the plugs with Autolite 45's, new ignition wires, distributor cap an rotor, air filter, adjusted the carb. The carb was replaced at 56K with a new single barrel. She has 76K original miles now. Very rough running, stalls out when put into drive. All ideas accepted, my old brain is not working good enough anymore.
I don't think they had the TFI box in 82. Maybe if he has a California model.
If it's fouling the plugs, I suspect dirt in the carb. When it dies on you, run out and pull the aircleaner off and get a flashlight, crawl up in the engine bay and shine the flashlight down the carb throat. If you see gas dripping into the engine from the carb, your fuel level is too high in the fuel bowl of the carb. That is usually caused by dirt getting in and hanging the needle up.
Pull the fuel filter and see how dirty it is. If it's really dirty, and you have fuel dripping into the engine, I am sure dirt is your problem. If you have a lot of dirt and rust flakes, it's usually from the rusty fuel tank. You can get a brand new fuel tank for cheap. I just got a new one for my Ranger, I ordered it online from Advance, got a 30% coupon off, $5 more from my speed perks, after all that I could not get it cheaper anywhere else.
Rectangular box on the side of the distributor? If so, that's the TFI system.
OP's truck is a 1982, so it does not have the TFI module, because it was introduced in 1984...on some.
All 1980/83's (and some 1984/89's) have the squarish DuraSpark ignition module that is located (1980/86) on the left fender inner apron, just in front of the firewall.

Probably the catalytic converter if still on the truck.
I had a friend that had the same problem.
To check, start it up and put your hand close to the cat. I would say it will be extremely hot. Just something to check that doesn't cost $$$. Trav.
Thanks, I will check out the CAT. I sent for a carb rebuilding kit also. Running out of time up here in the mountains, no garage an colder weather coming. Thanks all for the help
Checked over the motor again. Found nothing out of the oridinary wrong.Regapped plugs to .40, checked the cat, not excessively hot, an see no flooding or dripping in carb.Oddly, truck started running OK. STUMPED, but some what happy, until next time.
thank you all for the idea's. Something worked, just do not know what.
Glad it is running better. A sticking choke can cause plugs to foul. Have you checked that it is opening fully? Automatic chokes require seasonal adjustments to operate at their best. With cooler weather, you might need to make this adjustment.
Keep an eye on the inside of the carb if it happens again. You may find it's intermittent. If you happen to go down a rough road or around some turns fast, it can stir up dirt in the fuel tank and cause it again. You just have to catch it.
I think I would check/change the fuel filter just to see what it looks like.
