im having trouble with switches going bad.several companies make a replacement switch.any of them last?

 

Same here, got 2 bad ones that were only replaced 3 years ago.
Cheap Chinese knockoffs, can no longer find real FoMoCo. Green's are out of the real ones.

do you know if the four sided black trim around the window regulator on the 86-91 is still available?

 

If you are talking about the trim piece that goes around the switch, it is no longer available and I don't see any in the wild. E69Z 1223713-A

 

just disconnect the switch's connector and clean the pins, they get oxydized and start to work intermittently.

I recently removed the dash gauges pod and cleaned-polished all the pins of all the gauges which were acting funny. Now they work perfectly.
