How does the mpg get computed in the 6.0? Does the tank need to be taken below 1/2 for it to be reset like for the miles to empty. How accurate is the mpg reading? Has anyone who had bad milage per gal. compared the reading to the old paper and pen way?
I found my mpg. to be real close but i have 315-70-16 tires so my total miles travelled are a little short by the spedo. Not sure if you know you need to reset the computer after each fill up. I did not know I had to and thought after a mounth or so thought my mpg. was geting worse then some told me to hold down both bottons on overhead controler for a second to reset. (must be on mpg. to rest)

I get about 18 mpg driving 65, 12 mpg towing a 11,000lb trailer and my best tank was 22 mpg.
I don't know how it calculates the mpg but mines has been as close as .1 mpg and as far off as 2mpg. I think its more of an instantaneous calculator than a long run one. The Lincolns had an option for instantaneous or long run just like it.
On my lincoln it averages the last 500 miles (for average mileage) Not quite sure how the instantaneous works. Why would you want to reset every fill up? I havent reset mine in years, I still check it by hand every few months and its always dead nuts. If I reset it every tankfull I dont think it would give as good an average.
I reset my after each fill up to see what I did on that tank only not for the average of many tanks. since I live in the foothills I drive 11 miles to work and go from 4500 foot elavation to down to 1800 foot so my mpg can change real fast if I race up the hill every night or just drive like normal person (no fun cant fight back the urge to blow the doors off all the Dodge and Chevy boys).
I usally get 14-16 mpg driving like I stole it , 18-20 mpg driving easy. I checked my odometer with another car doing the same trip after 425 miles on mine my brother had 480 miles. when iI filled up it took 21.7 gallons for an avg. of 22.11 my comp claimed 21.4.
I have 315-70-16 Pro Comp All terran tires on stock wheels and lifted 3.5" in front and 2" in back.
The overhead computer will never give you an accurate reading. Whether it's how much gas you have left or what kind of mileage you're gettting. All its going to tell you is the Average mpg, not what you're actually getting. So its always going to be 1-2 mpg off. I normally get about 16-17mpg around town and plenty more on the freeway. But around town all the computer says is 15.8, when I'm really getting about 16 or 17 mpg. Always do the math yourself, that way you're sure of what your gas mileage is. As far as how many miles till empty goes, the numbers start to lose consistancy once it drops below 50 miles to empty. The moral here: Don't ever trust that computer with your life.
