Towing report #2 6.2l 4.30 gears
So another camping trip in the books and last one for the year. This trip was more flat as opposed to the previous trip. Truck was able to hit 6th gear a lot more. I played with the manual mode a bit on the freeway and made it stay in 6th on some hills it would have downshifted to 5th. It slowed speed by 5mph and then sped back up to 65 of course once it crested an over pass holding it in 6th gear. Once off the freeway I locked out 6th gear again and let the truck do its thing as it was some small rolling hills until we hit the state park. Loving the way this thing grunts pulling the camper. It sounds awesome. Pulls the camper great! It is much improved experience over the 4.10 geared 6.4 hemi I had. Truck averaged 8.5mpg for the whole trip. It appears it is getting about .5mpg better than the hemi towing and truck only has 700 miles on it yet. Maybe it will improve more once it gets broke in. Camper is a 2017 Jayco Eagle HT 324bhts. It weighed 8900lbs.leaving the factory. So I would venture I am close to 10k as it sets. Here is a pic checking in at park.

For what it is worth, a mechanic told me that making a vehicle hold its "gear" and "lugging" it is like taking a welder to the tops of your pistons. That has always stuck with me. I figure the ford engineers know what is best for the engine so I let the truck do its downshifts.
I'm not being critical or saying your experiment falls into the category above. But it triggered this memory and I thought I'd pass it along.
Thanks for passing along your experiences.
Edit: I have a 2018 F250 gasser with 4.30's on order so am VERY interested in your reviews.

I agree and most likely will not be making the truck do it again. Like you said more of an experiment to see how well or if it could pull a small grade like a large overpass in 6th. I am so impressed how Ford can design a good transmission that responds to input from the selector. Very smooth. The Ram is very lackluster in this dept.
