226 mpg

I recently calculated my mpg on the 226 in an F1 with 3.92, and am getting around 10 mpg. Anybody getting anything better? That is a lot of open highway 45-55 mph running in hilly country.

I've never owned a 226, but I'd say you should be getting 14 at least under those conditions. This is a fresh rebuild tho, is it broken in? The leaner you can set the idle mixture screws, the better mileage you'll get. They influence mixture up to cruise speed.

Does turning the mix screw in lean it out? I have it set right in between the sags but have room on both sides by about 3/4 turn.

On a recent 225 mile trip I figured my 226 with a 4.86 rear at 12.5 mpg. Most was in the 45/55 mph zone.

I haven't calculated it for my '51 226, mainly because it would be kinda low. The engine is tuned and timed pretty well...but man it can suck down the gas for a one-barrel.
I bet it is around what you are getting for MPG. It isn't much more than 12 that is for sure. Oh, and I'm running 4:86 rear gears. So I can't do any highway mileage tests. Just a bunch of short trips at 25 to 45 miles per hour.

My engine is a 1952 215 I6 with a 3.92 rear axle ratio. I've been getting 16-17 mpg since the engine was rebuilt. Before the engine work, I was getting closer to 10 mpg.
