Looks like a 460 to me, but I'm not that well versed in them to be 100% sure.
Looks too like there were some nice upgrades. Valve covers, A/C compressor, SuperCooling radiator, 3G internally regulated (and high output) alternator.
Very nice.

What is your truck? 2 or 4 wheel drive? Standard cab or otherwise? Presumably the '78 in your username?

Hopefully someone will know for sure what you have.

Paul,

Any input is appreciated! It is a single cab 4x4. Love the pickup, just a few loose ends as with any older pickup. Hoping to find out what I actually have before I start chucking parts at it.

At first glance I wanted to say 460, but that's just going off the shape of the valve covers. Looking closer I want to say 335 series, 351M/400, something about the water neck. Granted, it does have aftermarket parts, but I don't see the little two inch or so coolant hose between the top of the water pump and intake that my 460 has and my 351M doesn't.

If that's an edelbrock intake I'd imagine it'd say the engine size on it in front of the carb behind the distributor. Mine says Performer 460 or something close to that.

7 valve cover bolts = big block 385 series. 8 valve cover bolts = Cleveland/modified.

My 400 has the alternator mounted high like that. My 460 is mounted low down.

I am rolling dice and say 460 with a alternator relocate (high mount) kit.

351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.

351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow. The 351M and 400 are identical externally, only internal parts examination can tell them apart.

351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.

429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover

352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.

I can't quite see the thermostat housing and how it is mounted. However,
the 400/351m thermostat housing is mounted to the block and the 460 is mounted to the intake manafold. Good looking engine with the extras.

It looks as thought the thermostat housing fastens to the block and not the intake manifold. I am leaning to a 335 series engine. Is there 8 bolts fastening the valve cover to the heads?
as 77&79F250 states:
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow. The 351M and 400 are identical externally, only internal parts

Looks/feels like 8 bolts on the valve cover. I plan to tear her down a bit so I suppose we will soon see if she is a 351m or a 400.

4th digit of the VIN is the engine code. 1977/79 4WD: H = 351M; S = 400. Both have 8 valve cover bolts per side.

460 (7 valve cover bolts per side) not available with 4WD until 1983.
