Here's how I did it on my leaf spring F350 2 months ago. I was supprised at how easy the job went (with a pneumatic impact wrench.)
Take the tire off.
Support the truck on jack stands and put a jack under the axle.
Disconnect sway bar links, shocks, and panhard rod as applicable.
Remove the axle u-bolts.
Lower the axle. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE BRAKE HOSES!
Remove the shackle bolts. You might have to cut these.
Remove the springs.
you'll probably have more trouble if you leave the tire on.. you will have to lift the truck that much higher. not very safe. Also when you are supporting the axle on the jack.. try to use 2.. one on each end. Helps a lot, you dont have to try to balance it.

It's not something I'd want to do again any time soon, but the knowledge I've gained will make it easier next time.
