I recently picked up an 04 Navigator, and have an issue with my fuel gauge.

The gauge itself is currently pegged beyond the full mark, while in reality there is probably a quarter rank of fuel. The gauge has occasionally been at empty or at some random position, but generally likes to read more than full.
The issue that's throwing me for a loop though, is that the distance to empty reads correctly. A full tank shows 300 some miles, and it constantly updates.

I was just going to replace the fuel pump and sending unit, but after thinking it through, I don't believe this will solve the problem. Somehow the truck is getting a somewhat reliable fuel reading, but it's not registering on the gauge.

I did some searching, but most of what I found was for earlier vehicles, so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Is there an anti slosh module in the 04 navigator that could cause this issue?
Where is the connection that I can use to test the fuel gauge itself, without dropping the tank just yet?
Any other ideas on what could cause this issue?

 

I *think* you can put the instrument cluster into test mode so it can do a self diagnosis and display any error codes found. not sure if the 2004 knows how to do that. Try your friend google.

 

Thanks, I tried the instrument cluster test mode, and when selecting the sweep gauges option, ask gauges sweep except the fuel gauge.
Fuel gauge did a stuttering movement the first time, and no movement the second time.
Cycling through the options, it did give me a fuel tank fill percentage that seemed about right.

I'm thinking I have a bad gauge. I assume this requires a replacement of the full cluster or is it possible to replace just the fuel gauge?

If you pull the cluster it might be worth looking for a cold solder joint first. It might just need to have the connections reflowed.

 

Thanks for the help. I'll pull the cluster and see if I can repair it myself. Otherwise I'll send it out.

Last question, can I just swap out the cluster for one from pick and pull?
I haven't seen any information on the 03 and newer navigators, but read about possible programming issues on the older vehicles.
