Could someone fill me in on doing an oil analyisis on my PSD... How its done?.. Do I really need it done?.. Why is it needed?.. Can I do it myself? ...Where to have it done?. Etc...
The main purpose of an oil analysis is to determine what trace minerals are in your oil. The analysis will determine whether you have too much of a given element, for example copper. If so, that would be a sign that an internal part of the engine is wearing faster than normal, which would give you early warning of a possible future failure. There is an entire list of elements they check for, and they know what parts are composed of what elements, so the report might indicate that a high level of copper is a sign of premature main bearing wear. (I'm using this as an example, the main bearings might not even have copper in them.)
I have one done periodically, but certainly not every oil change. Once a year is typical for me, to see if there's a trend.
The best place I know to have it done is at Blackstone Labs. Click here for a link.
You can go with the Amsoil full synthetic with a bypass filter system. You change the filters at scheduled intervals. They offer oil analysis at there labs. Keep changing your filters do the oil analysis and you could go 100,000 or better on one oil change. Most people are uncomfortable doing that but the oil is capable of it.
