Removing remote shifter grommets?

My 3 speed remote shifter has a lot of slop in it. I ordered the rebuild kit. I worked on it this morning. I can not get the old grommet and sleeve out. I know there is a washer on one end and the brass sleeve has a head on the other end. It is so greasy and covered with dirt I can't tell which is the washer and which is the sleeve. It seems that the washer has fused itself onto the rubber grommet end.

What is the tip for getting these out? Thanks!

Drill the tube out.

You might want to consider these instead of the stock ends.

Are they better because it swivels?

How hard is it to get the new sleeve and grommet in? Soak it in hot water and use Dawn detergent?

Once you drill the old sleeve out (you just have to drill the lip and it will come apart) and degrease the shifter, install the new rubber and sleeve. The last step is peening over the sleeve to create a new lip. I used a ball bearing and hammer taking it slow. Remove any burrs or imperfections in the lip and you are good to go. Stock setup calls for a 5/16 wave washer followed by flat washer when installing on the trans shifters, helps take up play there.
