Department of Transportation, CDL, Business Insurance.

unless you are hauling cars from Texas to Mexico...

others should be along with real experience... I was just a truck driver for Lead products and fire hydrants . (CDL)

It ok to ask for the ins and outs of what should be done. But don't post your email.

Rather, respond to this thread with your questions.

So what you are talking about is starting your own business. I'd suggest you look into a small business plan.

the Small Business Administration offers classes to start your own business.
I took the classes to start a motorcycle repair shop... even had a silent partner.

get prices on insurance for that type of work
investigate who will need that type of towing.
piece work... or contracts..

finding customers are the hardest part..

So, are you talking F350 and “wedge” car hauling trailer?

I presume you’ll be interstate. So, you’ll need DOT number, cargo insurance and operating authority.

You’ll need a good broker to find you loads. Besides equipment, insurance is a huge cost of doing business.

A month ago would have been a great time hauling off flood cars. A local fence company suddenly had two new 17 duallys and dump trailers appear so I reckon they are hauling debris that flooded houses have piled up everywhere on the curbs.

I ran my own commercial transport & hotshot business here in AB Canada for 3+ years. I didn't do any oilfield. I strictly did commercial contracting for people such as landfill trips, household moves, scrap metal hauling, equipment transport, vehicle hauling, and much more. (Practically anything you can think of besides hazardous goods, chemicals, perishable goods & live stalk I've hauled before) I made this YouTube video a few years back of the steps needed to make a legit & legal Commercial Truck & Trailer for Hire business if you're at all interested.

When I ran my business I ran Just within Alberta Canada. I was registered for a Maximum GVW of 11,500 KG's and I just ran with my SRW 1 ton and 16' equipment flatbed. Strictly Light duty hotshot & transport under my own name. I ran $65,000 Cargo insurance, $2 Million Liability. And $25,000 (adjustable with a phone call) 3rd party trailer tow away insurance for trailers such as Holiday trailers etc. (trailers that aren't my own)

Im not familiar with canadian dot and such but to haul cars here youll need 100k cargo,1 mil liability before they will even load you unless you go under the radar, you can get a 36ft flatbed with ramps and install a winch and haul cars, equip or anything that legaly fits your trailer so your not just tied to cars, today averages .90 to 1.35 a mile cars so haul two on a flatbed and get 1.80-2.75 a mile, then if no cars look for anything to fit your trailer keeping at your weight limit, get lightest trailer you can find, weight cost. Be leary of any small broker period if working off load boards, dime a dozen.Treat your equip like youd treat your wife and dont neglect.

Are those rates per all miles, or loaded only?
