Rough idle

I just purchased a 2002 E350 with the 6.8 V10. 242k miles on it, the owner said the plugs had never been changed. His title said 136k when he bought it.

I pulled all the plugs and replaced them, along with the air filter that was rather nasty. It also had codes of P0113 (intake air temp), P0102 (mass air flow sensor circuit low), and P0307 (cyl 7 misfire). I cleared the codes after reading them.

Just got it all back together with the new plugs and air filter, cleaned the MAF, and it is idling about the same. Seems like it pulls better up top, but the idle is rough. Almost feels like a muscle car with an aggressive cam in it.

What should I be looking at next?

With the mileage you have I would:

Put all new oem coils on it.
Put a new temp sensor on it
Put a new MAF on it
Get new or refurbished injectors in it
Put a new IAC on it.

Than re-evaluate.

Before replacing everything, knowing how expensive that can be clean the IACV with Seafoam through the brake booster hose, check the PCV valve and elbow hose attaching it to the throttle body. Sometimes these crack and create a vacuum leak. If you need coil packs use Denso they are the OEM manufacturer and far less expensive than Motorcraft.

Edit: Have you changed the Fuel Filter?

Check for pending codes - and Bently has the right idea - check what he said before we go any further.

I realize replacing parts is expensive, but with the miles you have it just makes sense.

Try to clean a IAC with 250k miles on it may work, but may work and then stick again soon. Now your back in the same boat. Once all the maintenance has been done you can diagnose any remaining issues easier.

Chasing around hoping all coils are good and narrowing down a bad plug is very time consuming and difficult.

Do the plugs, coils, injectors, IAC,fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, sensors. I would also put a new fuel pump in......I know it's not a maintenance item but it has alot of miles on it and it not got much time left.

While your at it put new injector clips on all 10 spots, they tend to get brittle and break. And it's not a bad idea to put in 2 new O2 sensors.

Load test battery and take alternator off and have it tested. A bad charging system will affect fuel pressure.

Oh, and oNE last thing....pull all fuses and replace with new ones.

dude that's almost $1500. That's a very high priced baseline.

Battery is brand new, though I still need to replace the terminals.

I forgot to mention, but it stalls on first cold start. I need to give it throttle to keep it going at first, which now seems like the IACV. I can't see the other end, but you are saying the brake booster hose leads to it, and i can dump some seafoam down that line to clean it?

I just had shoulder surgery yesterday, so replacement of parts will have to wait a few weeks. I've only got one good arm for the time.

I appreciate the feedback.

Ouch, surgery always sucks.

$80 for a set of 10 refurbished injectors.

After poking around the internet, so i knew what the Ford IACV looks like, I found it on the very back of the engine. Conveniently right under the doghouse. Sprayed it with some intake cleaner, and the idle changed. So I may just replace that, but I am going to drive it a bit first. Fairly easy to replace on the van.

Cleaning the IACV allowed it to cold start without the aid of throttle today. Drove around a bit, and got some codes.

P0171 system too lean bank 1
P0174 system too lean bank 2
P0307 cyl 7 misfire

Seems like maybe the coil on 7 might be bad since that keeps coming back(if I move that coil and the misfire moves, I have my answer). Certainly need to change the fuel filter still.

Lean on both banks implies pcm cannot push enough gas to the motor, or its sucking alot of Un metered air, or you have huge exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors.

Fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, vacuum leak, are where I would start.
