what axles???

ok i recently bought a 1979 ford f250 crew cab and the guy befor be has it set up to run 44s with a special gear in it cant remember what size so i am looking for a parts truck to swap axles in to the crew cab

so what i would like to know is can i swap axles out of a newer truck (1990ish)
if so will i have to modify anything?

or should i look for axles out of a 1973-1979 truck?

thanks for any help in advance

If its the original 78/79 only, kingpin, high pinion front d60, it's highly desirable. I think the later model stuff fits but the front axles are different, the center housing is moved more to the drivers side after '79 and the spring perch is cast into it. Someone else will know. I'd try and find a matched set of '90s, front D60/rear 10.25 in 4.10. Swap the front gears, bolt in the 10.25. Buy a whole truck for under a grand, do the swap, bolt in the old rear, throw the gears in the cab and resell it. Could possibly break even.

no im thinking about swapping the whole axle in because the guy i bought it off of put 4.11s in the front and has a really low gear in the back and im thinking it would be easyer to swap the whole axle out

But i have never changed the gears in an axle befor so i dont know how hard that would be to do

I believe 4.10/4.11 was the only gear ratio available in the 4x4 F250s in this body style, though I'm sure someone else can confirm. It is definitely the most common that I have seen, so it may be difficult to find something else in a stock configuration. That F250 that you've linked to will have the TTB front suspension, so would require tons of modification and fabrication to get it into a dent.

For the newer front D60s, you would have to have the axle tubes cut down/replaced to get the spring perches in a location that will work as a bolt in for a dent. Or you can fab up some spring hangers to move the leaf springs outside the frame so it bolts in. Otherwise you'll need to find a 77.5-79 D44 from an F250 or D60 as these are the only true bolt in complete axles. You may also be able to find a D44 from a super or crew cab F150, though I'm not too familiar with them.

There were other ratios available. I've got the factory axles and they're matched 3.54's.

High pinion D60 front, full float D60 rear.

FORD FRONT AXLES
1977-PREVIOUS F350, F250 snowfighter: low pinion dana 60, very weak.....

1978-1979 F350, F250 snowfighter: high pinion dana 60, kingpins, 35 spline outters, 30 spline inners, internally splined lockout hubs

1980-1985 F350/F250: high pinion TTB dana 50

1986-1991 F350: solid high pinion dana 60, king pins, 35 spline outers, 30 spline inners, internally splined lockout hubs, different spring spacing that 78/79 axle

1986-1989 F250: TTB dana 44HD/ TTB dana 50, both high pinion

1991-1997 F350: solid dana 50/solid dana 60, 50 hase smaller ring gear and axle shafts than 60

1990-1997 F250: TTB dana 50, high pinion

1999-2008 F250: solid dana 60, solid dana 50, both high pinion, metric pattern

1999-2008 F350: solid dana 60, high pinion, metric pattern.

I think your Craigslist truck has a front TTB (twin traction beam) and you are looking for a solid front axle, if you are looking to do a front axle swap.

Replacing the rear axle would be easier. Post some pics of your axles too. It helps with identifying what you have. If the axles still have the tags on them post pics or the info on the tags.

What size tires will you be running? Which transmission?
Just curious what rpm you might be running with whatever combination you have, and the one you'll end up with.

Good luck with the swap.

the rear axle has 5.86 gears in it so how hard is it to change the gears back to 4.11s

I plan on running 35/36 in tires with stock trans and tcase

Take it to a good rear end shop, and it will need a new carrier and gears. Why would someone run 2 different ratios ? that's just stupid. Don,t put it in 4wheel drive until this gets fixed.

yeah the guy befor me had 4.11s in the front and was running 42s and has 5.86 gears in the back and has 54s on it and i dont want to run anything that big so i thought the eaisiest way to change them out was to get different axles and put them in the truck
