my guess would be an exhaust leak under load at one of the manifolds. the passenger side manifold at the rearmost bottom bolt is particularly fond of snapping off in the manifold casting.

No problem with exhaust passenger's side. Noise is on driver's side and is difficult to replicate, opening throttle while stationary. I was able to hear a slight "chuff" so a more detailed inspection of that side exhaust is coming.
When under load, on the highway, while accelerating, the "tick" is not in rhythm with any cylinder. It is spaced more apart than RPM. It is fairly loud and almost metallic.
