How hard is it to replace an exhaust manifold? I have an exhaust leak and its getting into the cab. I took it to a shop, and they quoted me nearly $1000 (there's also a broken bolt).
I have a 2008 5.4L V8. Is it difficult for someone without a lift to replace the exhaust manifold, and extract a broken bolt?
A special guide tool is required to drill out the broken studs, and the whole job could take the better part of a day to complete so $1k isn't out of line. In most cases the bulk of the work is completed through the wheel openings so the front wheels and inner fenders have to be removed.
Yes its a royal PITA. I'm doing both manifolds on a 2010 as we speak. Got the right side off, has 2 broken studs and one siezed. One of the broken studs is recessed 3/16" into the hole. I know there is at least one broken on the left side. Gonna be a fun day.
I watched a couple of video's on youtube of guy's replacing manifolds. Neither one had broken bolts, and they were both up on lifts. I would be on the cold hard ground with the truck up on jack stands. With your inputs and watching the video's, I don't feel so bad about paying out the money.
Finished the job today. All in all I had 3 broken studs, 4 that were seized in the head and needed a stud puller to remove, and 3 broken bolts holding the heat shields on the manifolds. I had to pull the starter, y-pipe, and both fender liners for access. Also had to raise the engine about 2 in so I could get my hands in between the front diff and engine. Fun stuff
