'07 F150 5.4L V8 Running Very Rough (all of a sudden)

Post '07 F150 5.4L V8 Running Very Rough (all of a sudden)

Had an issue with my '07 F150 5.4L V8 (now has 87,000 miles on it) earlier this year where it was running rough around 40-50 MPH. Through many different trouble shoots we ended up replacing two EVT's (engine variable timing solenoids), all 8 coil packs and spark plugs. It was running great for about 1,500 miles and last night all of a sudden, it starts to "growl" upon acceleration and vibrate consistently at all speeds.

Took it to my buddies house who hooked it up to his diagnostic computer and got the following codes:
- P0022 - Intake (A) Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 2)
- P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
- P0018 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 2 Sensor A
- P0300 - Random - Multiple Misfire Detected
- P0307 - Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected

He cleared the codes just in case that would fix something and upon restart, got the same codes again.

Drove it home and this morning took it to local auto mechanic. They hooked up the truck and found additional misfire codes:
- P0306 - Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected
- P0308 - Cylinder 8 Misfire Detected

The auto mechanic said that they checked to make sure that the spark plugs were tight and and coil packs on securely and after consulting some people they know at a Ford dealer and going through different diagnostics, they are recommending a complete engine rebuild and about $3,800 for the job.

I am curious if any of you have had similar challenges and looking on here it appears that the EVT replacement did the trick, but my new EVT's have less than 2,000 miles on them. Not to say that they couldn't go bad, but am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions to avoid a very expensive repair that may not be needed.

Does look like your drivers side bank 2 has gone out of control

You replaced vcts that's good . They should still be in good shape if you have to do timing job .
Your system is telling you that the phasor is not going to the position is it expected to be at . It needs good oil pressure to achieve that . The pcm tells the vct to release oil pressure to phasor to move cam constantly changing it . The cam sensors report that it is not working .
Problem is dirty oil and possibly blown oil seal on plastic chain tensioners . This usually causes whipping of the chains due to loss of tension . That causes broken plastic guides which fall and clog oil pickup screens . More loss of oil pressure .
Drop your oil pan and look for plastic . clean out oil pickup screen . It takes about $1400 in parts to do timing right . Most willing guys can do it without much in special tools . You could also look at oil pressure with an external gauge.
It is hard work getting timing cover off and figure about 10 -16 hours . We have talked many novices thru it . Only the willing need apply . If your cams are in bad shape you may want to just go the reman route .
