It's pretty simple. Unscrew the shift ****. Then at the base unscrew the cover. There is a pin on the left side that you have to be careful of. Pull that out (It is in loosely) and the lever will come right out.
I highlighted the pin to watch for. Careful not to lose it.
I think part 7220 is what unscrews in the base.
I just ran out and checked mine. The 7220 part should unscrew. It is probably been in the same place for 60 years so it might take a bit to loosen it up.
There should be two flats on the flange of the cap for a wrench. The cap is not very thick, so a pipe wrench or water pump pliers can pinch it tighter on the threads and make removal difficult. A large adjustable wrench or a wrench that fits the flats will work better. You can tap all the way around the flange with a hammer to loosen any rust. You should have the stick in neutral when you pull it out.
