Currently in the midst of the rebuild on the 300. Cylinder head shows two cracks after magnaflux. I have been trying to locate a good head, with no luck. Autozone, oriellys, napa, and advanced auto cannot get one. All of their builders say they do not have a good core to rebuild. I have called about every junk yard in town, most of them do not have anything older than the early 90s.
I got to thinking that maybe one of these auto parts houses can find me a refurb 240 head. Is there anything I need to know before just ordering a 240 head for a 1970 f100? Will I need to replace anything else, or will it bolt right up, using the original push rods, valve cover, Ect.?
I have done some searching, but really didn't find the answer to my question. At this point, I am stuck with a half built engine.
A 240 head will raise your compression about 1/2 point, but it will physically interchange with yours.
Have you thought about just getting a later model EFI head which should be much more readily available? It will also raise the compression, and you will need the later style valve train parts that come with it. Take some timing out if you use one.
I have also been looking into newer model heads. How new can I go? Assuming I buy a reman head that comes with valves, springs, & studs only, What else will I need to replace? Looks like the air pump holes are easily plugged. That opens more possibilities as well.
You can use any built through the end of production - 1994 IIRC?
You will also need the pedestal style rocker arm assemblies, including the pedestals, rocker arms and bolts (no studs).
I got a call yesterday that surefire has gotten a 300 core in. If it passes inspection , I should have it in two weeks . If it fails to pass, I will check into a 240 head, followed by an 80-90s 300.
