Grand Design has an outstanding reputation as well. From what I hear, their recent buy out by Winnebago has not changed their support level which is great! I would go to both
of their websites and look at each floorplan and it's dry pin
weight. I can't speak for GD but XLR is known to be VERY accurate. My rig was within 50# of it's dry weight with the LP full, batteries in, basement storage full, and packed for travel. Being that it's a toy hauler, it only gets lighter when you load the garage. On a TH, try to find floorplans with a dry pin under 3k. If you can't find one to a scale, go on specific forums for the brand you want and see if you can find a member who has scaled theirs so you have a point of reference on what the loaded pin will be. If you can find one at a dealer, ask them if they have a Sherline scale to measure the pin for you.

When you're ready to buy, remember that the MSRP on an RV is nonsense and you can't shop it like a car or truck. 35% off is a MINIMUM and that's on a special order RV getting it exactly the way you want. Leftover or sale rigs should be discounted further. I bought from and send people to Jeff Couch's RV Nation in OH. They do about 37% off every rig with no negotiation. Special orders arrive in about 8 weeks unless you want full body paint which tacks on another 2 weeks. My closest dealers wouldn't come within $9500 of Couch's so I made the 800 mile trip each way to pick it up. I love a good road trip anyways (if I didn't, I wouldn't be in to RVing...) so it was actually a fun plus to my buying experience....
Wow! Awesome information karl! Thanks! So it sounds like there is hope for a SRW F350! We fell in love with the GD Toy! Haven't heard of XLR? Being built with glue and staples bothers me though. Nice to hear that both have great customer service and they stand behind their product! Is it really worth driving all that way to purchase an RV? I know it's cheaper but is there alot of headache involved?

Thanks again so much for your advise and knowledge karl4Cat!

Is it worth saving almost $10k to you? It sure is to me. No headache at all. Drive there, pick it up, drive home...LOL No different than a camping trip.

XLR: XLR Thunderbolt Toy Haulers by Forest River RV

Their floorplan area on the website is currently light as this is the time of year they come out with new models. They just aren't up on the site yet.

No doubt we want to save that kind of money! lol We like the toy and they do have some good floor plans! The one I like (422AMP) pin weight is 3643! 😟 I see there are a couple others well below 3000. I guess it would be wise to stay below 3000 dry pin weight if I want to stay with the F350 SRW....?

I would. Keep in mind that new floor plans will be updated soon. This time of year new plans are released so there may be more options in your under 3k pin category...

NeoRaptor, what rear end is in the 350. Makes a difference in towing capacity.
Also don't forget the stuff the wife wants to take and you have to make room, adds a lot of weight.

The 422 is a beast in weight and length. My wife and I went looking for a new TH even though we had a two year 42' race trailer TH Looking = buying to my wife. She looked at the 422 first and the rest was all over with I tried to explain to tht that our 250 would be overweight. Her - "get a new truck then I want this" Me - "yes mam"

I'm REALLY hoping a F350 SRW will work comfortably! What I would like for my haul vehicle is a F350 SRW diesel, crew cab, 4x4 (not FX), Platinum. What do you experts think? Advise? Thanks!

I'm like you and don't want a dually. I've had four already. Ford gives good tow ratings for the F350 but it's hard to utilize with a CCC of 3100 lbs or so.
The only option I've found is the Ram 3500 Megacab. For whatever reason these 3500's, Mega SRW only, get a GVWR of 12,300 lbs. This is 800 lbs more than an F350 with 11,500. Given the weight of the Mega, full loaded, they net out with CCC of 4,100 lbs. It pretty much comes down to this or a dually.
