Coolant Question

Does any one know why VC7 "gold coolant" is recommended for '02-'05 Ex and '00-'01 Ex get the green coolant VC5. What changed between the the Ex's that would require a change in coolant? Why isn't VC7 backwards engineered/approved for '00-'01 Ex's like Mercon V was for their transmissions?
I am confused about what kind of coolant to use in my 2000 v10. Most posts I found were really old. RockAuto has the Motorcraft VC5 listed as the correct coolant '00-'01, but I had read that Motorcraft Gold VC7 was correct. I'm not sure what to use since the info in my owners manual is outdated by 17 years.

I use Rotella ELC in all my vehicles. Others will probably chime in.

I will be switching to Rotella ELC next week when the 200K maintenance work happens.

Isn't Rotella ELC for the diesel engines? I have the V10 engine.

On your V10 you can use pretty much anything, I use to use motorcraft gold on my V10.

Is motorcraft VC5 the old green coolant? What is the difference between motorcraft vc5 and gold?

I don't what the differences are but yes, I think the VC-5 is the original green coolant and the VC-7B is the newer (and assumed improved) gold.

VC5 is still available, but Ford dealers will switch it to the Ford recommended gold.

From what I read, the zerex G05 is the same stuff as the Ford gold. I have run it in all of my modular and 4.0 gas Fords. My in laws own a shop north of Atlanta and he likes it a lot as well. Apparently it doesn't sludge up when mixed with unknown coolants. It is a Hybrid Organic Acid coolant or HOAT. The real danger is mixing OAT coolants with traditional. Think Dexcool sludge. However, with enough flushing, you can change coolant types.

There is no danger....none....in mixing any Heavy Duty OAT based Extended Life Coolant with a traditional "green" coolant. The only thing that happens is you lighten your wallet because of how much more an OAT ELC costs versus a traditional "Green" coolant.

Well, that and you lose the OAT based cavitation protection.

I guess we will just have to disagree there. Unless it says "universal" on the side, I wouldn't chance it. I have seen sludge baths with OAT and IAT mixtures.

I guess I am a rebel. I use plain ol Prestone green stuff from wally world. Says on the label you can mix with any color. Horror of horrors, last spring was the first time I have EVER used distilled water in any vehicle cooling system.

PS I use dexcool in my GM products too.

The water used probably depends on where you live. I had nice water in Southern Illinois that was clear and mineral free. However the water here in Texas leaves behind nasty residue that I wouldnt want in my cooling system.
