I’m researching to buy an excursion so I appreciate the any info you can give.
I’ve run across quite a few threads saying that the v10 really didn’t change
through the production of the excursion . The main change I can figure from
Reading is to the heads to deepen the threads for the spark plugs to avoid the. bottle rocket issue ( 03 if I recall )and going to 3v heads ( don’t recall when that changed ).
The question I have is when I was researching maintenance items and on the extreme end the cost of actual engine replacement . I found that the parts interchange for the v10 falls as 00-01 and then 02-05 . I was wondering if anyone knows why the interchange is broken up like that. Is it a wiring harness / Ecu change due to the change in heads ?
If the interchange is 2002 - 2005 does that mean I should dismiss the 00-01
Models because of the change / update ?
As Thor said, the EX only ever got the 2V heads, even in '05 when the rest of the SD trucks got the 3V V-10 and 5 speed trans.
The V-10 interchange runs all the way up to the last year for the full sized Econoline vans, they also kept the 2V motors up till the end. They do use a different oil pan though, so that would need to be changed for an EX installation. If shopping for a used/rebuilt 6.8 I would make sure it had the '03+ heads with the increase number of spark plug threads. The van motors are still available brand new from ford and of course are the better heads.

if I end up with a really great 01 can the later 03+ heads be swapped onto it ?
Just count the threads for the spark plugs, if that is what you are looking for.
There really aren't a "bulk" of motor issues with these 6.8s, the early ones with too few plug threads can be fine if you overtorque the plugs and recheck them after a few thousand miles. Otherwise broken exhaust manifold studs are a common issue across all of the modular engines and those can be a pain but are doable, I did mine in the driveway.
