They are safe. They've been used for years, and are still used today. Also budd style rims aren't as safe unless mounted to strict mounting proceedures. To each there own though. Still enjoy that truck.

Ok I have the truck running but the carb was spilling fuel all over the place. Having the carb professionally rebuild, I do not know much about Holley. I just need to start finding the parts to rebuild the steps, any idea where to look?

I am pretty sure it's a wrecking yard search job.

We have a tree trimmer outfit with a bunch of C series trucks. I notice they seem to be stockpiling cabs so as to be able to keep the fleet running.

Billions served, but where you had rust, so did everyone else.

Are you good working with metal? You may be bending and welding more than you planned.

Fellow travelers are on Face book. Can't post the link, but go to FB and put "CSeries" in the search and find billions of fire trucks etc.

Stater

Ok, so now the carb has been rebuilt and installed. Went to start the truck and all I got was a click. Now I am thinking it is the solenoid or the starter. So now I need to find the starter number. Hoping it is just the solenoid, much cheaper to replace.

New trouble

Ok so I have determined the starter is bad and need to replace it. Looking for a part number is tough. I also have a question. I am seeing anti freeze dripping from around the oil pan. I have no clue where it is coming from. Getting discouraged right now.

Could be just a water pump showing signs the seals are going and dripping down towards the pan or a minor coolant leak from elsewhere making its way down around the sump gasket lip.
If its the dreaded coolant in the oil check for other signs like oil in the radiator or higher oil mark on the dipstick.
Loosen the sump plug a little and see if coolant leaks out first.

Looking for the part number is EZ if you have the parts catalog. Looking for a NOS starter is tough, because no one has any.

Thank you very much, what a pain this starter is to get out. Had to remove the exhaust manifold to reach the 3rd bolt.

End of project

Well things have come to a quick halt. Found anti freeze in the oil pan. Time to take a step back and figure out the next move. Maybe the scrap yard.

Wow, this thing looks pretty good in that first picture you showed, but if the engine has coolant in the oil, that's going to be some real fun.

I wouldn't scrap it--these trucks have a following, so a sale or part out at the worst would be an idea.

Of course, you could always get the MasterCard out.....

What was your plan with the truck?

534's usually have oil coolers, and they are the water type. Might be your problem.

The Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville didn't open until 1969. That's a cool fire truck by the way. Good luck with it....
