I have a rear axle from an explorer, so I'm going to have to fab up a brake, but I'd like to use the original hand lever in the truck.
ia there a U shape clip that mounts to the hand lever? If so can I purchase one somewhere? Or does someone have a picture of that part or at least of the lever?
should I be able to use a brake cable for the explorer? The 47? Generic? I'm not real certain how to go about this.
They are available new thru most old Ford parts places. It's called the parking brake clevis. I saw them on Mac's and Carpenter's sites, but most everybody else should have them too. Good luck.
I also see that Lokar makes a part that will work with their universal e brake cables. But I would be all in for around $200 with that system. I guess I need to figure out if I can fabricate one that will work with the hand lever and the ford explorer axle. I would think it could be done for much cheaper.
I used the truck's factory hand lever assembly and cable. I flipped the Explorer emergency brake cable assembly over on the rear end so it's actuating cable is now on the passenger side. This lines it up with the trucks factory cable. I then grafted both cables together using clamps and a turnbuckle for adjustment. The clevis at the hand lever is still adjustable but isn't needed, as adjustment is now done at the turnbuckle under the truck. I have the disc brake rear end so it was easy to simply reconfigure it to the right side using the Explorer cable assembly and fabbing up a new anchor bracket to the frame.
91A-2484 is the part number for the proper clevis. Dennis Carpenter has them available.
Hope this helps.
Wow that helps a ton. Thanks. So other than a 47 cable, a clevis, and the explorer cable (along with a self fabbed bracket) I'll need some sort of turnbuckle and some clamps? Is there any other parts I'm missing? I have no original parts from the explorer or the 47.
You will also need an anchor/clamp for the opposite end of the factory cable. The anchor attaches to the top right side of the trans cross member. That part isn't reproduced as far as I know. A proper size u-bolt could be made to work for this if your factory clamp is missing.
The clevis that is used on the park brake handle has a wider span than the one you identified above from Mac's. The clevis above is used on the bellcrank near the rear axle where the primary cable from the lever is separated to the two that go to each rear brake assembly.
