This is really bugging me. I've had my 2017 F350 Lariat (value package) for two weeks and can not figure out these lights. They go on when you open the door and start the truck. But then they go off and I can't get them to go back on. They do go on at night but not during the day, even when I turn the light **** to on. By the way, it's those headlight control lights as well that aren't lighting up. The controls on the door are lit up. Even on a dark rainy day like today, no lights. This can't be right. Shouldn't these lights come on whenever I turn on the park or headlights just like all vehcles use to?
I drive with the parking and fog lights on all of the time. The instrument lights come on and stay on until the daylight censor on the dash causes the instrument and radio lights to go off or dim. I don't think there is a way to change that.
Anyone? This is driving me nuts. Do your trucks do the same thing?
You can't change it. It used to be like you expected...when the headlight or parking lights are on, all your dash lights would also illuminate. But on these newer Fords, the dash illumination is controlled by a light sensor. Only when the "auto headlamps" decide its dark enough to turn on do the dash lights turn on...even if you've already turned on the headlights manually.
At least the instrument cluster is brightly lit at all times. My 2012 F-250 did not even have auto headlamps, but Ford still used a light sensor to determine when the dash lights...and instrument cluster lights...would turn on. So on a dark, dreary day...I could manually turn on my headlights but I couldn't even see how fast I was going.

Have you tried manually adjusting it here (picture attached).

Yes. It sounds like it's a beyond stupid "feature" that Fords brilliant engineers thought of. It's absolutely awful and I'm actually fuming about it. It's a very cloudy/dark day today and I can't turn on the lights. This is insane! I can barely see the switch icons on the various buttons. I'm so pissed about this I am considering taking the truck back.

While we all understand your frustration, I think a little bit of that Colorado recreational greenery may do you some good to relax on this one and live with the truck. I too am in Colorado, but haven't been in my truck on this overcast day yet, so I'm not as concerned as you. Hopefully there will be a fix for this soon.

So I guess by smoking we can let actual problems go unsolved...
It bugged me on my 2012. It could almost be described as a safety concern. I just cannot understand why Ford chose to do it that way. For decades...turn the headlights or parking lights on...the dash illuminates. Seems very straightforward.
One good thing is your vision is good enough for this to be a problem. I’ve got 20-15 distance vision but the last few years my closeup vision is getting worse and worse. It doesn’t matter if my dash backlighting is on or off day or night, I can’t read what the buttons are labeled. If I put my readers on I can’t see clearly out the windshield. I’ve tried to memorize what the buttons do but it’s still trial and error.
I know it doesn’t help your issue, but hey there is something positive in most situations. Good luck getting this resolved.

Lol, that's not what I was saying at all. Just pointing out not to get so worked up about it that you sell/trade the truck over it. I'm sure all the whizzes on here will have a fix soon.

I don't disagree I'm probably overly worked up about it. But it's truly an unbelievably awful design feature. I'm not spending $65K on a truck that I can't have lights on my switches so I can see them clearly. Any geeks out there that can figure out how to get rid of this feature in that Forscan thing?
Anyone know where can I file a formal complaint with Ford?
