All, finally having my x-fer case gone through in a couple of weeks by someone with better gear experience than I have. I'm looking around on the Internet for a lower low-range gear and not seeing anything; does anyone have experience or know IF there is a reputable option to increase my low range option (e.g. ~2.7 - 3.0 would be nice).
I'm not interested (at this moment) at the NP203 / NP205 double-low option, as a 4:1 low is a bit much unless I plan to climb on rocks. I know companies out there do other low box options (e.g. Dana 300 has a lot of options).
If it's important to your answer, it's the stock divorced case
A lot of people that have problems with the NP203 ditch it in favor of the stronger NP205 and some locking front hubs. The NP203 is huge, heavy, and weak. Plus, with part time 4x4, you get a little better mileage. There is a 3:1 version of the NP205 available aftermarket called the Lomax, but it requires a whole new case.
Appreciate the option to switch cases and I should have made the caveat that I have no reason to ditch a perfectly strong NP203. I also already have a part-time kit in it and manual hubs in the front. I know the 203 weighs a lot and some folks have had bad experience with chain drives (e.g. NP208, etc.), but my experience is this case is more than enough for my truck and I won't have to build new cross-members or get new drive lines.
Hoping to hear from someone who knows of or has used an aftermarket low gear to improve the ratio, OR confirm that no such animal exists. I checked Advanced Adapters and a few others and plan to make a call or two Monday. I will post if I find anything and hope someone else has already found something worth sharing. Thanks !
