I have a 79 f250 4x4 has the 400 I started the truck a month ago ran like always but I went out last week and it kept cranking I had to unhook battery I messed around with it couldn't figure nothing out except it was also killing. My spark I replace the ignition switch but got no where any help would be nice cause I enjoy driving the old truck plus its the one I turn to for all my trailer pulling in new to these forum so any help would be appreciated
Have you checked the relay between the battery and starter? Those can keep spinning the starter if they go bad, it might also keep your coil from getting any juice if it's bad as well. Worth looking into.

Make sure you have a ground between your engine and your cab. They usually run from the bellhousing to the firewall. My truck was missing the cab ground, and did the starter run-on, until I added the ground.
Take a look at the wiring for your distributor. The wiring has a tendency to break and could be connected just enough to allow spark some times and killing spark through vibration as the connection breaks.

Agree, relay solenoid , check the solenoid on fire wall and starter itself
