Another Timing chain Guide!?!
I have a 1999 f-250SD 5.4l (kids have named it "Old Bluey", and it stuck). To be honest, Old Bluey and I get into alot of trouble, in places that we have no business being. This meaning I am hard on old bluey. I am positive Ford did not intend the 5.4 to be used like how I use it.
My problem is 3 years ago I lost oil pressure immediately and by the time I got to a safe space to pull over, she seized up hard. When I tore her down I discovered the passenger side timing chain guide had shattered in enough small pieces, that when they went in to the pan, they totally clogged up the oil pick-up. Since, I had recently rebuilt the tranny, transfer case and front dif., I did a total rebuild of the 5.4l. New everything....Including OEM timing chain components.
Fast forward 3 years and 10kish miles, I noticed a ticking and slight loss of oil pressure. I took off the Valve cover to find the new timing chain guide has shattered again. I am pretty sure the replacement parts I used were Cloyes.
My question(s) are;
What could cause this guide to break like that.....twice?
Is my driving style (4x4 in rough rocky mountain trails, towing campers and trailers, exploring mud bogs streams and ice breaking ponds etc.) causing excess stress on timing components?
Did I just get a guide with poor/ cheap materials?
Are there different, more durable guides that I can buy?
And why are these not framed with aluminum, with a teflon (or something) runner for the chain?
Only reason I ask that last one is I know someone that has offered to machine one for me. Cost is reasonable considering this is my second (or third...I lost track) time tearing into the engine, and I don't want to do that again for at least another 200k miles.
Any suggestions/answers?
MMR makes an upgraded tensioner arm side but I dont know of anyone who makes an upgraded solid guide side.
There is the tensioner side
Timing/Chains/Guides : Modular Motorsports, Home of the Worlds Fastest Modular Engines
Those in the link are the tensioner side (although, that is the material I am looking for), and I have no issues with those. Just the stupid guide side.
I will cruise through the MMR link and see if they have the guide.
Thanks!
Is there a steel backed guide for the 5.4l? I know there is for the 4.6l, and if there is then maybe that will help you out a bit.
