Dana 44 question

I have a '79 F250 4x4, with a Dana 44 front axle. I am looking to do an engine conversion which involves a 6BTA5.9 Cummins diesel engine, with possibly a NV4500HD transmission. Will this axle be heavy enough??? I know a Dana 60 would be better, but I don't have a 60 and the 44 is already in it. This truck would mainly be used as a daily driver, work around the farm, and maybe a couple of local truck pulls in the summer. What's everybody's opinion??? Thanks in advance.

I think as far as the weight you should be alright. I don't believe the axle tube walls are much thicker on a dana 60 and the wheel bearings aren't that much bigger either. If anything, you'll have problems with breaking it with the power you have. Good luck either way. I'd run it til it breaks, since a dana 60 is an easy swap.

If you have the D44 3500lb front axle, you will be fine. It has 1.5" axle shafts, with 31 spline inners, and D60 outers. The only weak point on these axles is the external locking hubs, but the Warn ones are much stronger than the stock Ford ones.
