Question about changing fuel filters

I changed both fuel filters on my 2015 F350 6.7 I turn the key online for 30 seconds then turned it off for total of 6 times when to start the truck this morning after driving it yesterday and it took a little bit longer to turn over before it finally did, did I miss something up that I do something wrong. Thank you I appreciate all input and help. So I let my truck warm up this morning after going to start it at took a little bit longer for it to turn over I turned it off wait a few seconds then turned it back on and she started up how she used to perfectly fine does it just need to go through a drive cycle thank you again for all your help just wanted to give this update on my way to work. This is the second fuel filter replacement nothing was wrong with the other ones I'm at 40000 miles now ... also it seems like the fuel filter on the frame rail is louder if you put the filter in upside down on that will it fit stupid question I'm sure I did it right but thought I'd ask before I tear it apart and wait on everyone's input and advice thank you again

It sounds like you might have just the smallest air leak in your fuel system. You want to check that you have the filter on tight enough, maybe even just a 1/4 turn. That tiny leak can cause just a slight delay in the start, and that noise you hear may be air sucking into the system. Usually though this can also cause a loss of power, or even a check light. But just a slight leak may be enough to cause the noise and start delay without the errors.

There should be a positive stop on the water separator housing, (the frame mounted filter), tighten till it stops.

Just a side note, i have read on here where some people have cracked their housings after it gets a little old. I bought a new, genuine ford filter housing on Amazon for under 40 bucks just to have in the garage.

I purchased one from Ford myself. Noticed the part number has changed 3 times since 2011. Makes me wonder if they updated it to fix the cracking issue. We don't hear about broken filter housing much anymore.

I've never had a problem with the caps but I do lube the O rings and threads with clean motor oil and torque till I feel a distinctive stop and no further. The O ring seals not the threads.

forgive me for my ignorance and not knowing but you said clean motor oil on the threads cracked making sure none get inside the fuel filter right? And if some does by chance would that be an issue if it's a slight amount?

And of course the only reason I knew, was because I've done it too. I think the additional noise coming from the frame filter is the give-away. Glad to hear that was it!

Just a light film and no it won't hurt anything. Did it on my 6.0 and now the 6.7. Have never cracked a cap or had a problem.

I'm very surprised you didn't get any codes. I did the same, tightened it until I thought it was tight enough for fear of breaking something. It threw 2 codes. Of course neither was "fuel filter cover not tight enough" - that would be way too easy

I broke the bowl using the bolt fitting at the bottom. Now I use the strap to grip around the bowl. I like the idea of using a light film of oil so it slides easier. Never liked the creaking sound I got with I tightened it before.

Changing the bottom fuel filter has been interesting. 1st time I tried a strap wrench and the handle broke on the strap wrench. Took it to the dealer and let them do it. 2nd time I used a extra long breaker bar and 1-1/4" socket. Used very steady pressure and very very slowly turned the wrench. The cap did finally come loose and removed it. I apply a thin film of engine oil to the o-ring and reinstalled. A week ago installed a new filter and used the process described above. Still noisy and a lot of groaning coming loose. Have an extra cap behind the rear seat, so do have a backup. I think the long breaker bar lets me apply sufficient pressure without yanking on the breaker bar. Don't think it will ever be an easy process on my model year truck.

Gary, did you put anything on the treads of the cap? I was thinking of spraying some fluidfilm on a rag and wiping the threads with after my next change. Makes me nervous as hell. I think I'll follow your lead and go for a spare. Looks like you can get a replacement for $20.00 but it comes without the little faucet, spout and electrical connection
