2nd router for a 2nd network

Hi,

I'd like to hook up a 2nd network -- not connected to the net. There are times when I want to transfer private stuff, and I'd like to be able to do it over a 2nd network.

When I did some googles, it was as if nobody can believe that you'd want a network not connected to the web. When I tried various inquiries for 2nd router ( including 'not connected to the internet', the responses were all about cascading for better coverage and the like.

So, is it a reasonable thing to do? I can manage to set up routers, and I even have some idea of what I'm doing. But it always seems that WIndoze freaks out if you want to do anything unusual.

Or is it possible to get something like a crossover cables and just go wired between 2 machines. Used to be an option in the ooold das.

Thanks,

hj

ps Donjamer if you come back with 25 net references I'll be grateful -- embarassed as usual, but grateful

You don't need a router and another network for transferring files once in a while

They make a transfer cable for that.. Laplink is one and there are many generics..

Here are a couple options..

I have used one before and it works good..

Cheaper than a router

Easy Transfer Cable for Windows® - Limited Time Offer ppc-easy-transfer-cable-freeshipping-112014 - Laplink® Software

I should have also mentioned that you can do a second network with another router, but you would need to have both computers on the same network for it to work.. It wouldn't need an internet connection to work

Can get pretty complicated depending on what you want to happen..

I was thinking.. Why don't you just get an external USB drive and copy your files to there..

You can transfer them to the other computer and still have a backup..

Plus you can disconnect it and use it as needed

for an auction house I wrote software for, we used a secound router cascaded (168.192.2.xx) and it had no dns or gateway defined, so only computers on it worked and the slave clerk computers all had imbedded the non DHCP address of the database server (using thin client and server scripting)
