Truck lines....

So, i noticed after the first day or so the driver side door is not perfectly straight.

I also had a Bak revolver tonneau cover put on and the passenger side would lie flat on the seal on the top and i noticed last night the gap between the bed on the drivers side tail gate vs the passenger side. upon closer examination you can see in the bed where the driver side fender well is up tight to the bed where the passenger side has a larger gap. do you trucks look like this?

thx,

The bed in mine looks similar to yours and the gap at the tailgate is also more on the right then the left. I don't know if it is normal but i don't have a problem with it. I have a regular cab and my door aligns with the plastic piece behind it.

Your rails were not installed properly, they should be almost flat. When i put mine in i had to adjust them a couple of times to get them to sit right so the cover was tight to the tailgate.

I noticed before I purchased my truck that the hood didn't extend out as far as the fenders. It was especially bad on the passenger side. I mentioned it and they got a little bit of the gap of but it's still there. I'm not too concerned about it, I'll have to look at the doors and Tailgate now.

Mine is like that too. Not a big deal to me, it's just Ford has now lowered their standard to match Ram on this one.

That would definitely annoy the heck out of me, especially the driver's door. Since you'll stare at it EVERY time you get in the truck. Have you gone back to the dealer? If yes, what did they say? There's some room for adjustments in body panels, would just take some time to tweak things and tighten it up.

I've noticed some of the lines on my truck are "good from afar, but far from good." I attributed it to being an early-build aluminum truck. But so far, no leaks, squeaks, or rattles or wind noise...so I'm content.

Even cut lines used to be a source of pride for manufacturers. Now it's about costs and production speed.

Ford in particular had a strong reputation for their cut lines in the 70s. I tagged along with my dad and an uncle (I was an early teen, but was already into car magazines) when my uncle was car shopping - this was around 1978. Stopped at an L-M dealer with a good reputation, and out front was a late-model Town Coupe with all the balloons and signs on it. Dad and Unc were looking it over when a salesman came out of the showroom. He informed us this was a dealer demo, driven personally by the owner's wife and was meticulously cared for by the service staff. Unc took one look at the front clip and calmly said "This car's been hit." Salesman quickly said there was no way that was possible, the owner's wife didn't crash it. Unc motioned my dad over and pointed - Dad immediately agreed with Unc. Salesman adamantly denied, but my uncle said "Ford is famous for having perfect cut lines" and pointed out that the front right corner of the hood was misaligned with the fender and front cap. Unc then challenged the salesman to pop the hood. Salesman went and got the keys and came back... opened the hood, and it was clearly evident by newer/cleaner parts and fresher black paint inside the fender at the right front corner that there had been notable repair work done. Salesman stood there with his jaw hanging. We promptly left.

Today, it's just not as important, because to take the extra time necessary to ensure near-perfect sheetmetal alignment raises costs and affects the corporate bottom line.

as far as the door goes, it noticed it right after i got it and my concern was the rubbing of the door on the seal could be heard on bumpy roads, meaning to me that the door is moving. I asked the service manager at the dealer about it and he said there was very little adjustment in the doors any more and that he didn't think there was anything they could do to realign it. sooo... time will tell when i end up with a droopy door.....

The bed/tonneau cover issue needs to be addressed as i live in alaska and snow is the norm here, i do not want to get stuck with a frozen cover because the seals didn't keep the snow/water out and it froze the mechanism preventing it from opening. The bed alignment issue is not an issue providing it doesn't keep the tailgate from working properly. I had the tonneau cover installed by a dealer in wasilla which is 350miles away, they have already tweaked it and cannot get that side to sit flat, they even put new rails for the cover on to try and fix it. but the rail for the cover on the passenger side tilts up towards the inside.

Ultimately i was just curious if it was the cause of the tonneau rail tilting up or not. I'll keep working it and see what happens.

You had to drive 700 miles to get a tonneau cover installed?

well... yeah. most places will not ship the cover up here of if they do they want $200+ to ship it. The shop that is only 100 miles away wanted $800 for a $400 cover. So i went south(350 miles) and picked up the cover, wheels, and leveling kit at a shop that didn't rob me with shipping charges or markups. not to bad anyways.

life in Alaska, always looking for the better ~shipping angle~
