I have searched the web and this forum and cannot seem to find the answer to my question...
I drove through some high water recently and some got into my foglight and the bulb blew I went to Ford and bought a new bulb. I went home to put it in, but couldn't seem to find a way to get my hand in there to replace it?? I went back to Ford to ask them. They told me that I would need to take my BUMPER off!! I figured that I would do a little research on this before taking on this task... I figured that if this was the case that there would be a lot of threads regarding this.. The Ford service tech said it should take no more than 6 hours to complete the job!!!
Take the bumper off? Don't think so. Find another dealer because this one is full of it--they should have done this as a courtesy!
The fog lights are accessible by reaching behind them and twisting the socket about 1/3 of a turn. I have pretty big hands and was able to do this with a little patience (I replaced my bulbs with Sylvania SilverStars). Give it another try.
Take the bumper off...no wonder book rates are so high.
I agree. The 65w bulbs are much brighter and I haven't had any harness problems either. I run the Sylvania SilverStars and ma very happy with them. Much brighter, whiter light. One of the best mods I've done. They're available at most NAPA and Pep Boys stores.
While you're at the auto parts store get 2" longer Bosch wiper blades as well. Better coverage and no clearance problems.
Thanks for the replies... Great to hear that they were wrong on this... I have a front license plate and I believe that may have to come off to get my hands in there...
Thanks for the info on the wipers too! I was just about to buy some new ones this weekend...
I think that I am definately going to change out the lights to the SilverStar's as well since reading more of these posts raving about them...
I didn't have to pull my front lic plate...
once the grill is off, you can reach around the plate to get to it...
in fact, when I relocated my fogs after the westin bull bar was mounted, that's how I got the fogs and mounintg plates out... around the lic plate...
Just found this post while searching on the fog light bulb replacement. I spent all of about 3 minutes today removing my license plate assy. and could reach back and pull the bulbs easily.
However, I had already done a mod that I had forgotten about when I had first purchased the X.
The license plate housing was loose with the snap in retainers.
So, I removed the unit, installed 4 1/4-20 bolts with nuts on the inside of the bumper and one on the outside so I could create a stud. Made sure I used the right length. If I remember right, they were different due to the thickness of the plastic, front vs the rear bolt holes.
Then, I installed the license plate housing, installed a stainless steel flat washer and nut with locktite. Could use a nylon lock nut if you have them.
Now, when I need to get to the bulbs, simply remove the license plate (2 screws), and use a ratched to remove the 4 nuts/washers and the unit comes right off...no problem. Glad I did this.
Now, I am off to the parts store tomorrow to get some 9005 silverstars!
I just replaced the bulbs in my fog lights. Just pull the grille (easy to do), and reach behind the lights. Couldn't find the 45W bulbs at the local Auto Zone, so I installed the 60W bulbs ... nice bright fog lights now!
Somebody may have already said this, but do NOT let your fingers touch the glass portion of the new bulbs. The oils found naturally in your skin will transfer to the bulb, and shorten its life tremendously ... and they ain't cheap to replace.
Sorry to hijack your thread. Is it possible to put " factory " foglights in my 2000 X that did not come with them ? Anyone know if they were available for that year ?
They were not an option in 00`, 01` and up. I got mine off of Ebay and made my own harness, They bolt right in back of your bumper, the holes are allready there. Take out the stock 35w bulbs and put in Silverstar 65w 9005`s. you will like them a whole lot better.
