Stalling problems on '03 Expedition
Less than 1 yr old '03 EB Expedition w/23k miles. Stalled 2 weeks ago at 30mph. Then again today twice while idling. Took it into the dealer when first happened...no codes. Go figure. Will be taking it in tomorrow morning. I would be surprised if they could find anything. Had '97 and '00 Explorer with same problem, but they would have hesitation also. Sister's '02 Sport trac does the same thing. Anyone out there had this problem and what was done to fix it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!
It's probably your IAC valve. Seems to be a serious weak spot in these engines.

In this picture, the hose that's highlighted orange is plugged into a silver canister. The canister is the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. If you take the plastic "Triton" shield off of the engine and look around to the back left, behind the throttle body, you'll see it.
Email me and I'll send you a copy of the Expedition Owner's Guide - there's a great article in there that explains this item and its replacement.
If you're mechanically inclined, it would probably be cheaper for you to replace the IAC yourself. Even if it's covered under warranty, the $80+ diagnostic isn't. The valve seems to run around $65 or so.

Initially I'd think IAC too, but I've never heard anybody state that their vehicle died at 30 mph because of a faulty IAC Valve....usually occurs at idle (mine went out 10K miles ago and only acted up at idle). While it wouldn't hurt to have your IAC valve checked, you might have another problem.
I had a '98 Mountaineer that died randomly and had it in the shop half dozen times but (surprise surprise) they could never duplicate the problem. With all the engine dying going on out there, I have to wonder how many human casualties have resulted from Ford's stalled engines? You'd think they'd fix these problems before the multi-gillion dollar negligence claims started adding up.

Matt, you e-mailed me a copy of the EOG, but the file name was not highlighted (clickable) and I never could read the file. I am an AOL subscriber. Have any AOL members had problems downloading the guide?
I have Adobe Acrobat 6.0 and would be happy to convert it into a PDF and send it back to you if I could open it.

Well, took the truck into the dealer this morning and the service writer just called me to tell me that they haven't found anything as of yet. No codes....surprise, surprise. He said the shop foreman has been driving it all day and wanted to drive it home and back to work in the morning to try to get it to act up. I used to work there in sales and I know alot of the people there, so I think they are really trying...but what I don't understand is: how were problems found before the days of the diagnostic? I shudder to think that we are going to be paying for this $40K vehicle for the next 4 years and whether or not it is going to be reliable is questionable. I looked up info on the Texas lemon law requirements and it seems that I won't be able to fall under this because the problem didn't start prior to 12k miles. I will have had it 1 yr in October, but it already has 23k miles on it. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
By the way Matt, my email address is ***REMOVED BY MOD***
