Transfer Cases
I have a 83 bronco that i have just purchased. What is the difference between the million transfer cases for it. Dana 21, NP203, NP205, and NP208 Which one is better or are they all about the same, and will they interchange. I haven't seen which New process I have, but i was considering a gear driven case. Which one is gear driven or the best out of all of them.thanks for the help

the dana 21 was inly in the early broncoe, the NP 203 was a full time 4 wheel drive transfer case which was offered from 78-79, the NP 205 was the standard part time four wheel drive transfer case starting in 78, the NP 208 was the transfer case in newer bronco's I think they switch over to that in the mid to late 80's. I think the 205 is the best transfer case because it is a part time transfer case and has a lower gear ratio then the 208. the dana 21 is fairly weak and won't hold up to much that the full size bronco can give it. the np 203 and 208 are good transfer cases the nice thing about the 203 is that it's full time and has HI, hi lock, lo, and lo lock abilities, the np 208 is decent and works good on the road with it's higher gearing, and off road durability.

Thanks alot. My brother-in-law has a 79 ford 3/4 ton. his transfer case is made of cast iron and is gear driven instead of chain. I am thinking of getting a tougher transfer case. thanks alot for your help.

The 205 dose not have a lower low range gear ratio. It is only 1.98:1, it is however the toughest by far. It is gear driven. The 203 has a gear ratio of 2.0:1 and is chain driven. It is still a good case though. In 1980 I think Ford went to the 208 which has a gear ration of 2.62.

Transfer Cases
My tansfer case for my bronco is a NP-208 I would like to get a gear driven case. Would a 205 that is gear driven bold up or is there a tougher one.

A NP-205 will bolt up as long as you get a FORD NP-205. I got mine from a 1978 Bronco, it is not installed yet but someday it will get put in my beater bronco.

Heck Ya! I can be doing 65 on the highway.. bury the pedal it will kick down and the 4bbls open up and I am doing 90.... and that is with 3.50 gears.. eventually it will have 4'10's
I rarely drive it that fast... mostly because it is a bit insane... I tend to drive 65-70... milage is pretty consistent up to 70... over 70 it starts to guzzle gas...

Transfer Cases
Borg-Warner T-case in a Bronco is a model 1356. They were available either with a manual shift or an electronically shifted version. Personally if I could find the necessary components I am going to try and swap my 1356 from electronic to manual...less margin for error.
