I use my parking brake every time I park (assuming the cable isn't broken). The original cable lasted 17 years. The second cable (Raybestos) only lasted 2 years and 3 months. I got a replacement for "free" (still had to pay return shipping on the broken part) because of the lifetime guarantee but the second Raybestos cable only lasted 8 months.
For those of you who actually use their parking brake, what has been your experience? I recognize that there are a lot of people who never use their parking brake so I may just go snag one from the junkyard and see if I have better luck. Replacing the cable is somewhat of a PITA so it's not something I want to do every year or so.
The quality of aftermarket replacement parts is, quite seriously, a race to the bottom. With that said, I would go to your friendly parts department of your local Ford dealer with the VIN of your van and request the part from the dealer.
Now before you panic, odds are the part is no longer available and the parts man will tell you that. Ask him nicely if he will give you the Ford part number. When he/she does, hit that number into a search engine and start looking for it. If it doesn't come up, ask Green Sales (not Green Ford) or another company that specializes in obsolete Ford parts and try to get the official Ford replacement part. You'll probably save money in the long run.
Corrosion or friction wasn't the problem with the first replacement cable. The doohicky (I have no idea what it's called) swaged onto the end of the cable pulled off. I haven't removed the second cable to know how it broke. I'll find out tomorrow if all goes well.
If anyone will be under the Aerostar this weekend, I was wondering if you could tell me if the OEM parking brake cable has nylon/plastic over the cable. The replacement cable has some sort of thin plastic layer covering the cable over nearly the entire length and there's a short section of black sheathing where the cable does the S-bend between the two frame sections toward the front.
I don't recall the OEM cable having the plastic layer over the cable (just the bare cable except where the sheathing is), but the last time I looked at an OEM cable was about 3 years ago.
Thanks for the part numbers. I have no problem finding part numbers for my Toyota and Honda, but it seems like Ford goes out of their way to make it difficult. Is there a secret to finding them if you don't have the part in your hand?
NOS PARTS SOURCE in Olathe KS has 1 = 913-220-5746.

Note: This and the rear cables ([2] E69Z-2A635-A with 10" brakes; 9" rear brakes use different cables) are listed for 1986/89. 1990/97 might be the same, might not be.
I could look 'em up, but the OP failed to list the year of his Aerostar. (sigh)
