Question Exhaust upgrade

I have a 97 F150 single cab. 4.2 V6 it has two cat's on both sides. for the time being i just cut the muffler off about a foot after the Y. Since doing so it runs real rich and the gas milage went to crap. i want to put duels on it but im not sure what and how to do it. i was told that with a V6 it has better torche if i bring them out in front of the tires, but i dont know. what kinda mufflers should i run and where should i have them exit. and since we are talking about exhaust how hard is it to put on headers and how big a differance will it make.

thanks alot

Exhaust upgrade

Go to www.gibsonperformance.com and you can find a dual exhaust that exits before your rear tire. I'm not sure how good it is though.

Exhaust upgrade

I run Flowmaster 40 Delta Series one in/two out that exit both out the back. I put them on as soon as I got the truck. It seemed to kill the bottom end a bit at first, but looked and sounded great. I had it installed at Midas, under 500 bucks for everything, including the stainless tips. As far as the loss in torque is concerned, the gear diff change and the Diablo chip not only restored my torque but gave me much more power. The more mods that are made will require my engine to breath more and will utilize the exhaust more efficiently. Certain engines gain from only an aftermarket exhaust and certain engines lose with an aftermarket exhaust. It all depends on how your motor is calibrated. If it's calibrated to function best with a certain amount of back pressure, and you take that back pressure away, it may run worse. This was the case with my truck. However, the more performance parts I add to the motor, the more the motor needs to breath and the more it breaths the more back pressure I add back to the exhaust system. So it's running better and better with each modification. In fact, my last modification, the gears and chip, got me 8 tenths of a second at the 1/4 mile strip last week. That's a huge gain. If you don't plan on modifying your motor at all, don't get an exhaust, leave it stock, you need the back pressure. If you do plan on doing alot of modification, then your motor will need the increased air flow. Generally, a V8 will see power increases from just an exhaust upgrade, but the V6 won't. Now this in only on my 2003 model, earlier years may differ, so you may get different opinions.
