The check engine light came on the other day on my 97 XLT/5.4 and after a short review with other owners I replaced the DPFE sensor. That worked for about 100 miles then the check engine light came back on. I also noticed that it began to idle a little rough. Both Autozone and Advance auto parts check the diagnostics on the truck codes FREE. They stated that the codes were for the Oxygen sensors on the exhaust pipes. The one before and after the Cat converter. After $100 for these two babies I drove it a couple of miles and it still seems to have a little bit of a rough idle. But no check engine light yet.
Is there resources that show the identity of the computer codes?
Yeah, I did that before I installed the Oxy sensors. Last night the check engine light came back on. So I'll run it back up and get it checked again. The thing is I want to know if there is some place to check what the code number's mean. The guy that read them just looked at the numbers and said "yep, it's the O2 sensor.
Sometimes it is better to just spend the $65-$70 to have a shop diagnose it. At least that way, you have a better starting point. There are many different things that can affect the computer's reading of the O2s's. It could be from low or high fuel pressure, dirty injectors, a bad ground or connection somewhere, etc.
