I popped the top on it today and thought that is some nasty looking fluid.
I am tempted to pull the line off and blow out all the fluid. I do have the
fitting for the vacuum pump for bleeding the air from the system. I am
starting to get tired of all the little shortcuts and mistakes. That and the
little mess that the squirrel made out of the insulation below the passenger
side battery.
This one might take more than one flush to clear out the crap.
What I might do is flush it then drive for a week then flush it again.
thats why i ran a cheaper fluid through the system first before reconnecting the gear box.. when i pulled the old one out i found shiny bits in the fluid.. continued to do so as i continued to reconnect each part of the system.. once i was done with that i drained it and refilled with the RP ATF.. now theres also a filter in line to catch anything that could float through the system..
I flushed out my 05 with Mercon V, 4 quarts synthetic, and installed a Magnefine 3/8" filter in the return line. Filter plus magnet for fine metal particles. Part# R038M.
transmission fluid as power steering fluid? Is that normal?
Ford wants trans fluid to be used. I know it seems silly but that's what the manual calls for. Honestly I bet there is more than one Ford on the road running power steering fluid. At the end of the day it's just a hydraulic fluid.

older days that was all that was ever used.. newer vehicles (GM & Imports dont know about dodges) are really the only ones i know of that call specifically for specifically power steering fluid.. but even with them its still about 80% of the models will use regular ATF and maybe 20% of them call specifically for PSF.
