Most transfer cases need ATF. The transfer case is a sealed system. There is no filter, no cooler. So the fluid can get kind of nasty if it heats up. I generally replace my transfer case fluid every 30K miles, but I do a good amount of RV towing.
I use a synthetic ATF, but I wonder if you can find a non-synthetic ATF at all.
"Severe" duty conditions include any or any combination of the following:
• Excessive idling
• Frequent short trips in which the engine is shut-down before reaching full operating temperature
• Driving on dusty roads
• Driving off-road or in conditions that require 4 wheel drive
• Frequent towing or hauling (with the exception of very light loads)
• Using biodiesel blends greater than B5 (applies to oil, fuel filters only
Depending on the workload I will change all my fluids yearly anywhere from 25 to 38,000 miles a year .I have done this to every super duty since 2001 all of these trucks with the exception of the 2016 have achieved 200,000 miles and more with no issues fluids cheaper than gears.Transmission differentials and transfer case after a season of heavy snow plowing commercially is a given don't use synthetic just ford's recommended fluid it's coming out in a year anyway take care
