I recently installed a DeRale transmission cooler on my ’56. The write-up is a similar technique that I used. I did not want to drill into my boxed frame so I installed it under the battery box. I used the supplied rubber hose rather than making A/N fittings. I installed a light in the dash the shows when the fan kicks on (180F degrees). I also plumbed a transmission filter. I used a 30 amp relay to ease the electrical draw.
I also installed their temperature gauge. This required a little more effort since they suggest drilling into the transmission pan for the sensor. I fabricated a brass T-fitting in line with the “hot” side to mount the sensor.
I just had the transmission rebuilt with a shift kit and Hughes 2500 stall converter. Since heat is the number one enemy of transmissions, the investment is worthwhile.
