I previously owned a 69 Ford Ranger F100 and I have recently purchased a 71 F250 camper special. Both trucks were 2 Wheel drive. The best way to describe handling would be a floating sensation. Both have that soft ride feeling. Like driving over an overpass, hitting the seam in the pavement and instead of absorbing the shock they seam to take a moment of up and down before settling. Hopefully that makes sense. Basically I want to stiffen things up and I'm debating on coil over shock. Has anyone used them? Have you liked the ride? Is there any difference in sway or absorption?
I have not but you may not have to go to that extreme. Your existing shocks may just be worn out. Push down on the front bumper hard with your knee. 3 times in a row. As the truck raises back up after that good shocks will not let it keep bouncing. If it keeps bouncing then replace with some new shocks.
If you just want to stiffen the ride, then new HD shocks of some nature will help.
The "overload" style shocks with springs on them will make it pretty harsh with no load on the truck. I've had two trucks with them and I quickly took them off due to the harshness. I don't want that kind of ride, I already have a Mack truck that rides like a tank. My pick up doesn't need to.
Do as Jeff mentions, check your shocks. Some new ones might make a world of difference without having the added spring on them.
