The circuit breaker in the headlight switch is tripping off/on. Most likely the headlight switch needs replaced. The circuit breaker gets old and has caused this problem on quite a few trucks.

I Had seven Ford Pickups, from 63 to 88, and I had to replace the headlight switch in EVERY ONE of them. I almost lost the 88 to a fire because of it.
The Dimmers go bad on all the 'floorboard' mounted models too.

When you replace the switch, take a look at the wiring connector. If it is melted, it may need attention or the problem may occur again because of a bad connection on the switch plug. Also make sure there are no aux lights connected directly to the headlamp circuit.
