84 f150 rear wheels locking up ???

Not sure if it's brakes or rear end. Pulled the drum everything looks fine adjusted drums all looked okay. Put in reverse driver wheel locked up.. jacked up the rear end.. wheels spin freely in neutral. Put in gear forward and reverse work just fine .. lowered and tried again wheel locked up. Gave it some gas and drug the tire down the driveway and it gave free and worked just fine. Pulled up and down the driveway a few times the the rear Locked up again and I drug it up the drive .. ebrake isn't connected. any ideas ?

Something isn't right inside the diff so you need to go in there and have a look.

I'm avoiding it lol .. if it had a diff cover I would have done it already. Now it did sit for two years before I got it and got it running. Started up today drove up and down the driveway just fine. Reason I think it's might not be diff .. it didn't do it while not running or in neutral I can push it around. Had to do it pleanty before I got it running again. I definelty will be checking the diff fluid level soon

The problem is either inside the diff or in the brake system. Did you install new shoes on the rear? If so it is possible you have them incorrectly installed, there is a front(leading) and a rear(trailing) shoe.. the leading shoe has slightly less friction material on it. If you ended up with both trailing shoes on one side that brake will be prone to lockup.

I had a 2005 Ford ranger do the same thing and ended up replacing the rear diff. Mine actually locked up doing about 35mph! I had to drive the truck home in 4 wheel drive after that one. Lucky I didn't break an axle when that happened.

Didn't install shoes but everything looked good when I pulled the drums and adjusted them. I feel like if it were diff related I would hear some sort of noise or something going on. When I had the rear jacked up and in and out of gear worked fine. Speedo even got up to 55 . No sort of noise at all.
