Is there any way to register a vehicle in California without dealing with emissions I was just going to register it in az but my friend wanted it so that's not really an option
the Broncos been sitting for a few years we were told it was missing real bad so we bought it for $300 figuring it was probably plugs or something I popped the hood and got a bit nervous when everything ignition related was brand new
It had a clogged fuel filter leaky diff and bad rear main seal the exhaust has been replaced and its not going to pass emissions but no check engine light and besides it still having a bad fuel filter it runs great but doesn't seem to hold pressure in the fuel line
Some rural counties, once you transfer ownership you have to smog it to register it in your name. Once you pass, you dont have to do it again unless you sell it to someone else. Counties with more population, i believe require every other year. Im in rural california so i only have to deal with it once
I don't know the laws in California but here in the USA if a vehicle is over 20 years old it can be registered as a classic which doesn't require emissions inspection. If the vehicle is over 25 you can register as a antique and avoid any inspection at all. Both of these have mileage restrictions though and you can't tow a trailer. I don't know what year it is but if it's obd2 it may not be terribly hard to make it pass, here it would only need a visual inspection and pass the plug in test, no tailpipe checks on obd2 vehicles.
CA is strict. Smog every two years, visual inspections, sniff test for older vehicles, computer test for obd2. Unless you're rural, you're out of luck.
In CA,there are 13 "Smog" counties (last time I checked),
where you have to have your vehicle smogged every two years.
If it's a "Non Smog" county, you only smog it when you sell it.
The seller is responsible,& they will also do a visual inspection.Everything
need to be installed & working.1975 & older is exempt.
You might want to sell it in Arizona instead.

So there you go. some check engine lights are some really stupid things like an overlooked bad gas cap seal or a bad O2 sensor. My brother's '99 Ranger with a 4.0L had a cracked plastic upper intake manifold that was causing bank1/bank2 lean CEL on long drives.
At the OP; get a cheap OBD2 reader and check the codes. Post them up and we can help you with it.

In Texas you can register as classic but you still have to have the normal emissions testing like any other vehicle. On the 25th birthday of my truck I can register it as an antique and no emission test are needed.
