Productive two days!

Yesterday I dropped the fuel tank for a hutch mod. I had noticed that my truck sounded a bit sharp at low fuel, and had been wanting to for some time. Also changed the oil.

Here's some pics.
The screen assembly was broken.
Check out the broken and cracked strainer
Harpoon mod. Will be the only good thing about getting fuel.
Added a couple ball valves to stop messy fuel filter changes
Best thing was that my truck made less of a higher frequency cackle afterwards. Thank you fellow enthusiasts! Your free flow of information enables a guy like me to run this awesome rig!

Next up gages and 6.0L tranny cooler!

Dave

Good work! The H/H mod has been one of my favorites, not only because of the noise level of the engine went down, but I can get 5 more gallons of fuel in the tank and when the pump clicks off, the tank truly is full.

Is it was totally cool putting 30 gallons in my tank when it all had a quarter tank. Also tried hitting the pump a few more times, which used to be the only way to get more fuel, and u could see the fuel in the neck.

Again, what an amazing group of people here!

another benefit of cutting the tubes is you can get fuel level to same point when doing MPG calc..

I have done a couple of long runs and the needle will stay on F for a while some 140 miles towing and close to 200 when not towing.

I fill up to the top of fill tube so I can get the same amount or to same point every time.

have to be careful as when the pump click off I have be sure to take nozzle out and lay on ground, see how many gallons and get my Archoil fuel additive out to put in tank, flush a bit down the neck and dribble fuel in to top..

nice

What is this fuel additive? I have never added any additive to my tank. Is that recommended?

a lot of people like diesel kleen, others swear by 2-stroke oil......

personally, every now and then, just dump a quart of ATF in when refilling. old green really seems to like that.

I use Stanadyne Lubricity formula. There is a chart that has been floating around here for years, with a brief search you can probably find it. Then, you can make an educated decision on how much you want to spend and on what products to poor into the tank, if any at all.

I don't know if the Stanadyne has much to do with the 18.5 MPG I get, but I know having the truck up to 100% does.

Our trucks do not need a fuel additive in any way. You are just spending money for some tiny peace of mind.

I had heard about ATF because of the detergents in it. Hadn't heard of the others though.

'Detergent' in ATF is not the same as 'detergents ' in fuel. The paper mentioned above shows ATF is a loser as a lubricity additive.

No additives are needed. I'd go as far as to say none will produce any measurable results besides the affect on your wallet.

The ASTM standard for lubricity is adequate to provide a full life for our injectors. All fuel you buy at the pump meets this standard.

Want your injectors to last longer? Use good motor oil and stay on top of your OCI.

I'm loving the common sense here. I started a thread after talking to a guy that actually works for Mobil Exxon and his job was to make sure the diesel fuel was properly processed and additives added. He told me straight up the additives off the shelf or a waste of time and money, especially for the Ford Powerstroke.

Sounds right common sense wise. I had a hard time believing the fuel and vehicles were designed to allow wear. Perhaps some of the additives add residue

@SkySkiJason I have an early 99 F450 cab chassis. Will the parts inside my tank looks the same and require the same mods? Thanks!

I'm planning some summer projects for the truck and also need to get in touch with you about a bronze pilot bushing for zf 6 swap.

That thing is badass!!!!

Yes, the mods are the same in spite of the pickup being a little different. Those steel tanks have issues with the coating failing and plugging up filters. I’m on my 3rd tank now and will be buying a plastic replacement tank to permanently fix it one of these days.
