My 1988 F-150 302V8 suddenly stalled as I was driving. The battery is full charged and I have dash lights, head lights, etc., but the radio does not play and the engine will not turn over. I have a feeling it is electrical (fuse??), but am not sure where to start looking. I at first thought it was the iginition switch, but the door chimes with the keys in the "on" position. Help!
Sounds like power has stopped going to or from your ignition switch. One possibility could be an in line fuse(fusible link). Another is somehow a wire came disconnected from you ignition switch or switch harness somewhere along the steering column? Do you know what a Fusible link loks like, or how to find it?
The solenoid should normally only affect the starting of the vehicle and not cause it to stall. For the inline fuse or fusible links start under the hood. check and wires on the drivers side of the engine compartment going towards the firewall and look for any kind of 'lump' or protrusion on the a wire that looks as if it has no purpose. Sometimes it is a plastic piece about a hlf an inch in length and about 3 or more times as thick as the wire it is on. You can just cut it out and resplice the wire together solid so that it has no more link to test it and see if that was the problem. Once you determine if it was it is very easy to resplice in a new link or make your own in the wire again.
I guess it is not a stall, but a dead truck. I have nothing coming from the ignition switch. No radio and no engine. Nothing! It is like the key is in the "off" position. Tonight I replaced the starter solenoid and wiggled the key and steering wheel, and did get the radio for a brief period on the "Accessory" position. Once I turned the key to "Start", the radio died and nothing again. Are the fusible links still a possibility? I might open the steering column this weekend and see if there is a short in there somewhere.
before you pull the 'entire' column apart I would try replacing the ignition key cylinder first. you say you wiggled it and got the radio for a second in the accesory position? THis sounds like the key cylinder is shot to me. Wiggling it around wouldn't shake up anything else other than the cylinder. Try replacing that first.
Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner, but it has been raining here and I have to work in the elements. This is where I am at so far...
I have checked... fusible links and the battery ground (all passed).
I have replaced... starter relay and the ignition switch (to no avail).
I was going to replace the key cylinder, but the retaining button on the bottom of the column I think is missing. I used a 1/8 drill bit to depress the button, but it seems like there is no button. I poked around in the hole, but the cylinder did not come out. Am I doing something wrong? I did not pull the steering wheel, but according to my Haynes manual I should not have to.
