Old fuel

I'm looking for advice on how to clean the fuel that got "forgotten" when my F100 was parked long ago. There's not a lot, but enough to worry me. Is there anything I can do that falls between "replace the tank and fuel lines" and "put some new gas in and cross your fingers?"

Thanks.

Inspect the hard lines for signs of serious corrosion. Pull the rubber lines and blow out the hard lines. Replace rubber lines (they deteriorate with age and alcohol... a few feet of rubber hose and a few hours is time well spent),

Replace filters including the one usually screwed into the carb.

For the tank... here is the hard part. Pull it (after draining), pull the sending unit and have a look. If it is really cruddy, add strong solvent (acetone), agitate with a chain inside and drain. Clean the pickup screen, re-install, add fresh gas and have fun.

It should run OK for a while at least. If the tank is really nasty, it may gunk up the filters after a while.

Thanks Blue and White. That's exactly what I needed. I'll get to work on it this weekend.

If you are going to the trouble of pulling the tank I'd recommend just replacing it. I bought mine for about $70 delivered. New sending unit was $45 more. Well worth it. My 2 cents.

Thanks, Celtic. I was thinking that too but wanted to see how bad the rank was before I decided. I'm fairly certain that the everything inside the tank is ruined though. Thanks again.

No sweat (literally ). If you replace it, be sure to get the correct tank. There are a couple of possibilities.

Check it before ordering a new tank. Mine sat for 15 years, after syphoning and dropping the tank I filled it with 7 gallons of apple cider venegar and put a chain in it to knock everything loose. Hit it with a power washer and it came out shining like new. Added a new sending unit, and filler tube, replaced all rubber lines, blew out the hard lines, changed the filters, rebuilt the carb and fired it up.
