I'm guessing that it's my rear pinion that is humming on deceleration. Been reading up on the pinion preload and yada yada.........but here's my question: What I've read is about setting the preload when building the 10.5 Sterling with new ring/pinion installs or full axle rebuilds. Is it possible to drop the shaft, remove the wheels, and apply a little more torque to the pinion nut?
I don't want to do a full axle rebuild right now. Eventually, I'll be swapping out the 3.73s for 4.30s, but its not in the budget at the moment. Damn rental house is costing me a fortune getting it ready for new tennants (carpet, paint, etc). Please advise on going forward with applying more torque, if possible.
So I crawled underneath the Bus while it was on jack stands and had my son carefully accelerate up to about 40mph. Noise was very prominent, but I couldn't isolate the sound. Maybe the pinion, maybe not. I put a little drag on the system by lightly using the parking brake. At that point, the noise couldn't be duplicated. I checked for loose ujoints, loose bearings on the transfer case output, pinion bearing, and the slip yoke. The yoke had the most wiggle to it. I'm leaning towards that as the cause of the noise.
I didn't have the right socket to get the rear ds flange apart and give the pinion a 1/4 turn, so I mounted my GoPro to the axle and went for a drive. I'll try to upload a small video for opinions. To me, the pinion didn't make any unusual sounds, accelerating or decelerating. Once posted, please give me your thoughts.
If it was quiet and is now noisy it's more than likely the pinion bearing(s). Mine whines but it's due to how I set it up. I must've not got the pinion depth perfect, at 65 it has a slight whine. My noise isn't going to cause issues, just noisy. I'll bet if you pull the cover you'll find some metallic in the oil.
BTW, when you do the job get a newer Ford SD finned aluminum diff cover. They are cheap and offer cooling of the fluid.
Just bought it in July, so I have no idea how long the noise has been there. Fluid changes have been done in both axles, transfer case, and trans with nothing out of the ordinary. No metal found. The rig has a pretty good lift on it and I have no idea if drive line angles are where they are supposed to be. Took it in vacation hitched to my toy hauler and the noise was less prominent with a little weight and sag on the rear. Don't know if it means anything or just coincidence.
Completely stock, other than the lift and tires. Has 3.73 gearing. Wondering how much spline engagement there is and if there's any lube left. Haven't measured the length of the shaft to see if it's stock or aftermarket. Heard they were supposed to be around 52in stock. Can you verify that?
