Hello, I have a 1989 F250 460 w/C6 transmission. So I was out driving today and was doing 55 and coasting down to 45 and I heard this terrible scraping sound and next thing you know I've lost power to the tranny. At first I thought it was the flex plate or the torque converter but after getting it towed home, while unloading in into the shop, it was able to roll off the truck even though the gear shift was in park. So this was making me have second thoughts about it being the TC or flex plate. I haven't done anything with it yet but I plan to drop the tranny and take a look at it. But I was wondering if you guys had any idea where I should start looking or what this might sound like to you guys?

Just make sure it wasn't the differential that failed before you start tearing the transmission out. Start it up and put it in gear, if the driveshaft doesn't turn you'll know you have to tear the transmission out. Be safe doing this.
If it's a 4x4 truck it could also be your transfer case that took a crap. And if the transfer case in that truck is a Borg-Warner 1356 then quite possibly what you'll find there is the oil pump retainer wore a groove in the case and broke loose, causing it to spin around and break one of your shift forks. I don't remember which fork it is that gets damaged (high/low range select or 2wd/4wd select) but it's pretty common and easy to repair once you get the transfer case out.

Thank you very much!! I drained the transfer case today and found the hose and barb from the pump in the bottom of the transfer case. It had the same green hose clamp as the pictures I had seen. I started to try to get the transfer case out tonight but will finish up tomorrow morning. I have a harbor freight transmission jack so that will make things a little bit easier. Is there any threads on here far as rebuilding a transfer case?
None on here that I know of, but there's a real nice one here: Rebuild your own transfer case. BW1356 - Ford Bronco Forum
When I rebuilt mine I ordered my parts from Southwest Gear. The gal I talked to knew her stuff but I don't remember her name, this was a few years ago. I don't think they have a website though.
